How to access data

Once the database window is open, the user can browse through the contents of the EcoWin database by choosing either View… > Query… > Clear & Select from the menus or by pressing the ‘Query-Select’ button on the database window toolbar. This will open the standard EcoWin Select series, which a user can use to search for and select particular series for further action in the same manner as would be done within other EcoWin products such as EcoWin Pro or the EcoWin Pro Excel Add-in.

After one or more series has been selected in Select series, pressing the ‘OK’ button will transfer the selected series back into the EViews database window. This can be done multiple times, until a list of all the series that the user wishes to work with has been built up within the EViews database window. At this point Select series can be closed using the ‘Cancel’ button.

Once all the series of interest have been made available in the database window, the user can then choose to move the data associated with one or more of the selected series into an EViews workfile or into another EViews database. All the standard EViews methods are available, such as copy and paste into an existing workfile or database using the right mouse menus, creation of a new EViews workfile containing the data using the ‘Export’ button, or importing data into an existing EViews workfile using the Fetch menu item from the workfile window.

The user can return to the EcoWin Select series at any time to make additional series available for use in the main database window. Note that if the ‘Query Select’ button is pressed, the existing contents of the database window will be cleared, while if the ‘Query Append Select’ button if pressed, the existing contents of the database window will be preserved.

As an alternative to the graphical interface, once the mnemonic of a series within the EcoWin database is known, a user can fetch the series directly by name from the command line or within an EViews program. For example, a series can be fetched into the current EViews workfile from a database that is either currently open or has been added to the EViews database registry, using the command:

fetch default::usa01006

Note that the series name does not need to appear within the currently open EcoWin database window for this command to be used. Other commands such as ‘copy’ allow the name associated with the series to be changed during the procedure, as well as supporting the copying of series directly from an EcoWin database to another EViews database.

If an EcoWin database is going to be used frequently, it may be worth adding an entry for it in the EViews database registry. The EViews database registry can be accessed by choosing Options… > Database Registry from the main EViews menus. By pressing ‘Add New Entry’, a new database can be added to the list. The procedure for adding an EcoWin database to the registry is similar to that discussed above for the File… > Open… Database dialog. The Database/File Type field should be set to ‘EcoWin Database’ and the ‘Database Name/Path’ field should be set to default.
